Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport

The Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport is a proposed airport on roughly 6,000 acres in the Ivanpah Valley, about 30 miles south of Harry Reid International. A combined environmental impact statement and BLM resource management plan amendment began with a Federal Register notice published May 19, 2025.

Where it stands

Environmental review is in progress. The prior 2006 environmental impact statement, suspended in 2010, was cancelled, and a new combined EIS and Resource Management Plan Amendment was initiated by a Federal Register notice published May 19, 2025, with the FAA and BLM as joint lead agencies (Federal Register, FR Doc. 2025-08124).

Scoping closed September 5, 2025 after public meetings in late July 2025, and the EIS remains in development (SNSA project FAQ). The site is roughly 6,000 acres in the Ivanpah Valley, about 30 miles south of Harry Reid International (Federal Register), with Landrum & Brown Inc. as consultant (SNSA EIS project site). A long wait is expected before the next formal action (Las Vegas Review-Journal).

Approvals and public record

The Federal Register notice of intent, FR Doc. 2025-08124, was published May 19, 2025 (govinfo). That document number is the only case reference in the sources we have.

What is not known

No publication date for the draft EIS has been announced, and no cost estimate has been released; a $6 billion to $14 billion range carried in our own earlier record is unverified and we do not repeat it as fact (SNSA project FAQ). No contractor beyond the environmental consultant is named.

Why it matters

A second commercial airport is the only structural answer on the table to gate capacity limits at Harry Reid, and the environmental review is the gate that has to clear before design work of any scale can be let. Pairing the airport EIS with a BLM plan amendment means two federal agencies control the schedule rather than one.

Timeline

  1. Original EIS

An earlier environmental impact statement was prepared and later suspended in 2010.

  2. Notice of intent published

The Federal Register notice cancelled the old EIS and started the combined EIS and plan amendment.

  3. Public scoping meetings

    Scoping meetings were held.

  4. Scoping closed

The scoping period ended and the EIS remains in development.
